ABA therapy focuses on increasing desired behaviors by reinforcing them and reducing negative behaviors so variety of skills can be taught such as communication, adaptive skills, social skills and toilet training. Interventions that use applied behavior analytic principles have been long established as researched and effective approaches to increase appropriate behaviors and decrease problem behaviors for individuals with autism spectrum disorder and related disorders. Good quality ABA therapy can only be delivered by a Board Certified team as described below.
The Board Certified Behavior Analyst ® (BCBA ®) is a graduate-level certification in behavior analysis. Professionals who are certified at the BCBA level are independent practitioners who provide behavior-analytic services. In addition, BCBAs supervise the work of Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts, Registered Behavior Technicians, and others who implement behavior-analytic interventions.
The Registered Behavior Technician TM (RBT®) is a paraprofessional who practices under the close, ongoing supervision of a BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D. The RBT is primarily responsible for the direct implementation of behavior-analytic services. The RBT does not design intervention or assessment plans.
